IELTS Speaking: Extend Answers Naturally and Handle Follow-Up Questions

By HiLernity Editorial TeamPublished

The safest speaking strategy is not to sound “advanced”; it is to make each answer easy to develop. Give a direct response, add a reason or example, and qualify it when the situation is not absolute.

Use expansion moves, not memorised paragraphs

Practise four moves: explain a reason, give a specific example, compare two cases, and add a limitation. These overlap with the general exam speaking strategy and the more advanced C1 speaking guide.

If you misunderstand, ask for clarification rather than guessing. If a word disappears, paraphrase it. Practise the techniques in conversation repair.

Do not memorise full responses to predicted topics. Check the official IELTS source for current administration and format details.
