English Study Plan by CEFR Level: What to Focus on from A1 to C1

A useful study plan changes as your English changes. The same activities should not receive the same priority at A1 and C1.

A1: build a reliable core

Prioritise high-frequency vocabulary, basic sentence patterns, present/past basics, numbers, time, everyday questions and short listening. Speak in complete but simple sentences. Repetition is productive at this stage.

A2: expand everyday independence

Add common past/future forms, comparisons, modal verbs, travel/work situations and longer listening. Start combining sentences with because, but, so, when. Practise short conversations rather than isolated phrases.

B1: connect ideas and repair communication

Build control of perfect forms, conditionals, relative clauses and broader collocations. Retell, explain reasons, tell stories and learn how to clarify when communication breaks. At this stage, fluency practice should become regular.

B2: improve precision and range

Work on register, complex grammar choices, connected speech, argument structure and topic-specific vocabulary. Record speaking, rewrite important texts and request feedback on recurring patterns rather than isolated mistakes.

C1: refine flexibility and nuance

Prioritise collocation, stance, hedging, discourse organisation, advanced listening, concise writing and the ability to adapt language to professional or academic contexts. Accuracy still matters, but precision and rhetorical control become central.

A balanced weekly template

• 2 sessions: input—reading/listening at an appropriate challenge level.
• 2 sessions: output—speaking/writing from memory.
• 1 session: focused grammar or pronunciation.
• 1 review: vocabulary retrieval and error log.
• Tutor lesson when available: diagnose blockers, practise interaction and get targeted feedback.

Progress rule: do not move levels because a calendar says so. Move when you can consistently perform the communication tasks expected at the next stage with reasonable independence.
