How to Write a Discussion Section in English: Interpret Results Without Overclaiming

The discussion section answers a harder question than “what did we find?”: what do the findings mean, how far do they travel, and what remains uncertain?

Keep three layers separate

• result: what the analysis showed
• interpretation: what may explain it
• implication: what it may change in theory or practice

Language should signal the layer. The data show is stronger than the data may suggest; use each only where justified. The principles of academic hedging are central here.

Compare findings with earlier work rather than merely citing it; this continues the synthesis skill in the literature review. For quantitative patterns, use data and trends language without turning correlation into causation.
