Discourse Markers and Sentence Adverbials: Nevertheless, Consequently, Admittedly, and In Fact

Advanced linking is not about inserting formal words between sentences; it is about naming the relationship the reader should infer. Nevertheless, consequently, admittedly and in fact do four different jobs.

• nevertheless: an unexpected contrast
• consequently: a result
• admittedly: a concession or limitation
• in fact: a correction or strengthening

Punctuation cannot rescue the wrong logic. First determine the relation, then choose the marker. For contrast, revisit although, despite and however. For controlled certainty, connect this with academic hedging.

A useful editing test is to delete the marker and name the relation in plain language. Restore only a word that accurately labels that relation; this produces stronger cohesion than decorating every paragraph with “advanced” connectors.
