How to Write an Academic Introduction in English: Context, Gap, Purpose, and Roadmap

A strong academic introduction does not begin with the widest possible statement about humanity, technology or “today’s world.” It gives the reader only the context needed to understand the research problem.

Move through four questions

1. What is already established?
2. What remains uncertain, contested or under-described?
3. What does this study do about that problem?
4. What should the reader expect from the paper?

The gap must be proportionate to the evidence. No studies have examined… is risky unless you can support it. The language of academic hedging helps distinguish a real gap from an inflated claim.

Align the introduction with the synthesis in the literature review. Then check whether the opening and the abstract tell the same research story at different scales.
