Subject–Verb Agreement: Tricky Subjects Made Simple

Agreement errors often happen not because the rule is unknown, but because the real subject is hidden inside a longer phrase.

1. Find the head noun

In The quality of the lessons is improving, the subject is quality, not lessons. Ignore nouns inside of-phrases when deciding the verb.

2. Each, every and everyone

Each, every, everyone, everybody, someone and similar forms normally take a singular verb: Every student has access. Everyone is ready.

3. Quantities and measurements

A plural-looking measurement can behave as one unit: Ten kilometres is a long walk. Two hours is enough. If you mean separate items, plural agreement may return.

4. Collective nouns

Words such as team, staff, family can vary by dialect and meaning. British English may use plural agreement when members are viewed individually; American English usually prefers singular agreement for the group as a unit.

5. There is / there are

In formal edited English, make the verb agree with the following noun phrase: There is a problem. There are three problems. Informal speech sometimes reduces this distinction, but careful writing should not.
