Noun Clauses: That, Whether, If, and Wh- Clauses

Noun clauses let an entire idea occupy the grammatical position normally filled by a noun.

1. That-clauses

After verbs of thinking, reporting and perception, a that-clause can function as the object: We believe that the change will help learners. In informal English, that is often omitted when the meaning remains clear.

2. Whether and if

Use whether or if for yes/no uncertainty: I don’t know whether the tutor is available. Whether is preferred before or not, after prepositions and in more formal writing.

3. Wh- noun clauses

Question words can introduce noun clauses: What she said surprised me. We need to decide where the meeting will take place. Inside the clause, use statement order, not direct-question order.

4. Noun clauses as subjects

What matters most is consistency. This pattern is useful when the content of an idea—not a person or thing—is the subject. In formal writing, long subject clauses are sometimes moved to the end with anticipatory it: It is clear that the system works.

5. Control complexity

Noun clauses make writing more flexible, but several nested clauses can become difficult to read. Prefer one clear hierarchy of ideas over a sentence that contains multiple layers of reporting.
