Apposition and Supplementary Clauses: Adding Precision Without Another Sentence

Advanced prose often needs to add a second layer of information without giving that layer equal grammatical weight.

Apposition does exactly that: Dr Karim, the project’s lead statistician, reviewed the model. The appositive identifies Dr Karim, but the core clause remains Dr Karim reviewed the model.

Integrated information identifies; supplementary information comments

Compare the poet Seamus Heaney with Seamus Heaney, an Irish poet and Nobel laureate, …. The first expression helps identify which poet. The second assumes the referent is already clear and adds a side comment.

Punctuation carries meaning

Commas, dashes and parentheses signal that material is supplementary. A dash can make the interruption more prominent; parentheses make it more recessive. Review the larger punctuation system in our guide to commas, semicolons, colons and dashes.

Supplementary relative clauses behave similarly

The revised policy, which takes effect in January, changes the reporting threshold. The clause comments on an already identified policy. That distinction connects directly to defining and non-defining relative clauses.

Editorial principle: supplementary material should be genuinely supplementary. If removing it damages the central logic, it probably deserves a full clause rather than punctuation that tells the reader it is optional.
