Principle vs Principal: A Rule, a Main Person, or “Most Important”?

A principle is a rule, belief or foundational idea. Principal means “main” as an adjective and can name a person in a leading role.

• Our principal concern is data quality.
• The school principal addressed the parents.

Use word class as a diagnostic

If the word directly modifies a noun and means main, choose principal: principal reason, principal investigator, principal objective. If you mean an abstract rule or standard, choose principle.

The old mnemonic “the principal is your pal” works only for the school meaning. Advanced writing needs broader control, especially expressions such as in principle, on principle, principal component and principal amount.
