A C1 Reading Routine: Long-Form Texts, Selective Annotation, and Retrieval

C1 reading requires more than understanding difficult sentences one at a time. You need to preserve the argument across pages, notice changes in stance, and decide which unknown words matter enough to investigate.

First pass: read for architecture

Read a substantial section without stopping for every unfamiliar item. Mark the main claim, a counterargument, a change of position, or an example that carries the reasoning. The critical reading guide gives a deeper framework.

Second pass: annotate selectively

Investigate vocabulary that blocks meaning or recurs in a useful pattern. For collocation and register, use corpus-based English.

Close the text and retrieve
