Borrow vs Lend: Which Direction Is the Item Moving?

Borrow and lend describe the same temporary transfer from opposite viewpoints. Follow the direction of the item.

Borrow: receive temporarily

borrow something from someone

Lend: give temporarily

lend something to someone or lend someone something

• Can you lend me your pen?
• He lent me his charger.

Same event, different viewpoint

I borrowed Aida’s laptop.
Aida lent me her laptop.

Common errors

Can you borrow me your charger? → Can you lend me your charger?

I lent a pen from my colleague. → I borrowed a pen from my colleague.
