Word Families: Build Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs from One Core Idea
Advanced vocabulary growth is not only about learning more dictionary headwords. A single lexical family can provide several useful forms, but each form has its own grammar, pronunciation, and typical collocations.
Learn the family, not an isolated word
If you learn decide, connect it to decision, decisive, decisively, indecisive. This multiplies your expressive range and helps you recognise unfamiliar texts.
- decide → decision → decisive → decisively
- analyse → analysis → analytical → analytically
- respond → response → responsive → responsively
Suffixes give clues, not guarantees
Common noun endings include -tion, -ment, -ness; adjective endings include -ive, -al, -ous, -able; adverbs often use -ly. Treat these as patterns rather than mechanical rules because spelling and meaning can change.
Grammar must change with the form
A useful exercise is to rewrite one idea using different members of the family.
- They decided quickly.
- They made a quick decision.
- Their response was decisive.
Stress may move
Word families can change pronunciation as well as spelling. Record stress when it shifts.
- PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAphic
- EConomy → ecoNOmic
Build a four-column notebook
Use columns for form, meaning, collocation, and example. Leave spaces when a family member is uncommon rather than inventing a form that does not exist.
- verb | noun | adjective | adverb
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume every family has all four major parts of speech.
- Do not use a correct form with an unnatural collocation; vocabulary knowledge includes word partnerships.
Quick practice
- Create a family for “success”.
- Turn “They analysed the data carefully” into a noun-based sentence.
- Check where stress falls in one family using a learner’s dictionary.
Suggested answers: Possible: succeed, success, successful, successfully; They carried out a careful analysis of the data.
Key takeaway
Word-family study links vocabulary and grammar. It gives you more choices in writing and speaking while also improving reading recognition.
