Presentation English: Signposting Your Audience from Opening to Conclusion

A good presentation does not force the audience to guess where the argument is going. Signposting language makes the structure audible.

Opening the presentation

• Today I’d like to focus on three questions.
• My aim is to show why…
• I’ll begin with the current situation, then look at the options, and finish with a recommendation.

Moving to a new section

• Let’s turn to the second issue.
• That brings me to…
• Having looked at the problem, let’s consider the solution.

Highlighting evidence

• The key point here is…
• What matters most is…
• Notice that the figure rises sharply after June.

Handling examples

• To give a concrete example…
• For instance…
• This is illustrated by…

Referring back and forward

As I mentioned earlier… creates cohesion. I’ll return to that point at the end helps the audience understand that a question has not been forgotten.

Concluding

• To sum up, there are three reasons to proceed.
• The main takeaway is…
• Based on this evidence, I recommend…

Delivery rule

Do not overload your presentation with signposts. Use them at genuine structural boundaries. Strong signposting is visible enough to guide, but light enough not to distract.
