Everyday Survival English: Essential Phrases for Real Situations

Survival English is not about memorising hundreds of sentences; it is about owning a small number of flexible phrases that help you act when the situation is real.

1. Asking for clarification

  • Could you say that again, please?
  • Could you speak a little more slowly?
  • What does ___ mean?
  • Do you mean ___?

These phrases are more valuable than pretending you understood.

2. Transport and directions

  • Which platform does the train leave from?
  • Does this bus go to the city centre?
  • Could you show me on the map?
  • How long does it take?

3. Shops and services

  • How much is this?
  • Do you have this in a different size?
  • Can I pay by card?
  • I’m looking for ___.

4. Appointments

  • I have an appointment at three.
  • Could we move it to Thursday?
  • I’m running about ten minutes late.

5. Problems

  • I think there’s been a mistake.
  • I’ve lost my key.
  • My card isn’t working.
  • Could you help me, please?

How to practise

Choose five situations from your real life. Record yourself saying one opening phrase, one clarification phrase and one closing phrase for each. The goal is automatic access, not perfect memorisation.

Best habit: learn complete phrases and adapt the final noun, time or place.
